It has to do with that perennial moment when a girlfriend (or boyfriend) looks into your eyes with that slightly sorrowful, almost pitying look, and says, "I really like you, you're a nice guy (or girl) but..." —and then proceeds to give you all the cheezie lines that they think they should in order to let you down easy, aka dump you! Lol!
My personal favourite line has always been, "it's not you, it's me." I've heard that one a few too many times! Oh yes, you aren't that far off if you think this song might be a bit autobiographical!
