Lyrics

I feel my whole life turning
On a field of restless burning desire
I’m on fire
Those sleepless nights I’m dreaming
I drift in and out of a burnt out mind
What do I find?
I don’t really care what Wordsworth said
But Tintern is a lonely scape I dread

Yesterday may be all that I know
Tomorrow is a dream of something more
I don’t know what to say
I fight with everyday
All I want is hope and nothing more

I feel so tired and wasted
All torn and knotted up inside
I try to hide
But still my heart keeps pounding
And I never really seem to know why
I lose time
I don’t really care what Coleridge said
But I fear I shot the albatross dead

Yesterday may be all that I know
Tomorrow is a dream of something more
I don’t know what to say
I fight with everyday
All I want is hope and nothing more

I don’t really care what Byron said
But Manfred’s is a path I dare to tread

Yesterday may be all that I know
Tomorrow is a dream of something more
I don’t know what to say
I scream out everyday
All I want is hope and nothing more

Story

This song is one of those ones that was both fun and magical to write.  It at all started during a Half-Hour Late jam session one Sunday afternoon.  We were in-between songs, and as per most jam sessions, this particular in-between song moment ended up lasting about twice as long as the song we just played and the song we were about to play. And, like most of the in-between moments, we were sharing stories and talking about whatever happened to roll off the top of our heads.

Well, on this particular afternoon, our poor drummer Jeff made the mistake of telling us about a date he had been on the night before that did not go over that well.  He endured quite a few friendly jibes from the rest of us with that story and we all had a few laughs over it.  Evenutally, after cutting him off and finishing most of his lines for him, we finally encouraged him to tell us how the date ended.

Jeff laughed and said,"She told me I was a nice guy but ..." and then he laughed some more and told us he just stopped listening to her after that because he had heard all of these let down lines countless times before.

Todd jumped in and said something along the lines of "why do girls always have to start a break up by telling us we are a nice guy but ...?"  Sean agreed with him and the three of them started laughing.  I hadn't been paying much attention to the conversation as I was busy goofing around with my guitars, which is par for the course with me, and I suddenly broke into the lick that forms the basis of the song. Todd said, " hey that sounds pretty good. Do that again."  So I did. Sean started playing a chunking rhythm and Jeff followed it up with the drum beat that is in the song.  We played around with a basic structure and within about 10 minutes had all the music done. Honest, it really did come that fast!

At this point, we didn't know what to do about lyrics. The chorus "you're a nice guy but.." was in place, but we didn't know what else to do. Todd simply told us all to leave it with him, so we did, which was definitely a wise move. I am not sure if it is because Todd has been dumped an incessant number of times, or has done the dumping just as many (maybe a bit of both), or if it is simply because he could easily see through all the stereotypes associated with breaking up, but he came up with a brilliant lyric that is very funny, yet still poignantly true. It is great stuff!

Yep, to say we are all very proud of this song is an understatement.  We all see it as nothing but good pure fun, which is how it came to be written in the first place--by a bunch of great friends sharing music and having fun. Hope you like it!

Lyrics

Dumped again, my heart ripped apart like a condom wrapper on grad night.
I remember it like it was yesterday. Kathy and I were going to last forever.
I loved her, she loved me, nothing could have been better.
But pretty quick the music stopped and I was left without a chair.
You know, I thought she said we’d last forever. I thought she said she’d never leave me.
I remember going over to her house and crying, “baby I love you, please don’t leave me.
But she didn’t care. She just looked at me and said…

You’re a nice guy but … it’s not you it’s me.
You’re a nice guy but … you can do better than me.
You’re a nice guy but … I’m just a little confused right now.
You’re a nice guy but … I want to date other people.
You’re a nice guy but … you’re just a friend.

I learned two things about breaking up that weekend.
The first: tequila kills the pain. The second: country songs are written by guys like me.
But I moved on. I grew up. I met Melissa. She came, she went, she said…

You’re a nice guy but … it’s not you it’s me.
You’re a nice guy but … you can do better than me.
You’re a nice guy but … I’m just a little confused right now.
You’re a nice guy but … I want to date other people.
You’re a nice guy but … you’re just a friend.

Now, a couple of weeks ago, I met Shelly at the local meat market.
She didn’t have much to sell, but I was a desperate buyer.
A couple of weeks after meeting Shelly, I met Danielle.
Shelly was nice, but Danielle was everything I ever wanted in a girl … soft, sweet, pretty with legs that could crush my head like a grape.
Now, I didn’t know what to do with Shelley. Me and her just wanted different things.
Shelley wanted me. I wanted Danielle.
I couldn’t tell her the truth, so I went with what works …

You’re a nice girl but … it’s not you it’s me.
You’re a nice girl but … you can do better than me.
You’re a nice girl but … I’m just a little confused right now.
You’re a nice girl but … I want to date other people.
You’re a nice girl but … you’re just a friend.

You’re a nice girl but … I didn’t want to hurt you. I had too.
You’re a nice girl but … I’m thinking of your needs.
You’re a nice girl but … we tried to make it work.
You’re a nice girl but … you just need to find yourself.
You’re a nice girl but … we’re much better friends than lovers.
You’re a nice girl but … I just need a break from us.
You’re a nice girl but … we’ve grown apart.
You’re a nice girl but … it was never really meant to be.
You’re a nice girl but … you’re just a friend.

Lyrics

Hey now baby well I’m feeling alright now
Going to California in the Stang with the top down
Riding down the road never looking behind
Lookin’ for trouble not knowing what we’ll find
You flash me a smile with your sunglasses on
Cross the US line at the crack of dawn.

Hey Hey, We’re going to California

A little later on while you were driving
I woke up to sound of sirens whining
Took a look behind state trooper closing in
Said you wanted a picture of me with him
He said “Ma’am, why doing 105?”
All you could say was “It’s good to be alive”

Hey Hey, we’re going to California

There’s one summer I’ll always remember
It’s the one with you sitting on the fender
A photo of us at Solana beach
On top of the world nothing out of reach
As we headed North you looked me in the eye
I could tell by your smile this day would never die

Hey Hey, we’re going to California

Story

I have always been a huge Beatles fan. This song is one of the more obscure songs from the early years. I have always liked it because is was one of the first songs that showed Lennon starting to write from a personal level. He was always prone to extreme jealousy and this song definitely shows that.  But the original Beatle track for this song had more of a country slant to it, which I always thought never suited the darker, aggressive, and outright mean lyrical tone of the song. This version is a straight ahead rocker with a musical edge that really complements the lyrics. This version is aggressive throughout.

Lyrics

I just can’t sleep again
And I just don’t know
Why I can’t hold onto you
Or let you go

So I get in my car and drive
With no place to be
I’m a loser on the run
Running only from me

I’m one day away from tearing us apart
I’m one day away from a broken heart
I’m one day away from breaking us apart
I’m one day away from your heart

I started thinking about what you said
And all you need from me
You’re tired of my neglect
And selfish prophecies

I’ve tried to reach for you
That’s what I think I said
But I’m just not sure what to say
Its all messed up in my head

Chorus

The streets all pass me by
The lights all shine away
There’s not a soul in sight
No one to call my name

I’m trying to drive to you
I want to hold you near
But I think I missed your street
And I broke my rear view mirror

Lyrics

Oh how I need to feel you next to me
I need that love and strength for all to see
Without you I’m a little bit unsure
I don’t see what I have I just want more

Oh how I need to feel you here with me
Fill me with the love I don’t think I need
I’m just so scared that you are all but gone
I hold on to my friend hope and carry on

I long for those old days when you were here
Strongly by my side I had no fear
Misguided confidence it drove you away
I just didn’t know I needed you to stay

Oh how I need to feel you inside me
Fill me with the love I never see
I’m just so scared that you are all but gone
I hold on to my friend fate and carry on

Tears and sorrow seem to come and go
What I’ll do without you I don’t know
I guess I’ll find a way to carry on
But will I be myself with you gone
Will I be myself with you gone
Who am I now that you’re gone

Story

Last summer I discoverd a Lisa Loeb song called "Summer."  It was on a compilation CD that I had bought over a decade ago. For some reason, I had overlooked this particular track then, and by pure fluke, I came across it last summer.  Well, what a cool tune. If you haven't heard it, I would recommend taking a listen. I fell in love with the track and listened to it over and over again on my way home from work. Keep in mind it was mid August at the time and we were in a bit of a heat wave.

Well, one night, after having listened to Lisa Loeb once again on my way home from work, I decided that I was going to write what I hoped would be a catchy and infectious song that embodies the free spirit of a hot summer day.  I tapped into the Lisa Loeb vibe and also borrowed a bit from the Beach Boys (man, who hasn't done that?), and also looked at Katrina and the Waves Walking on Sunshine. I played around with a few chords and suddenly the line "Summer Looks So Good on You" came to me. From there, the music started to take shape around that one line, which soon became the title. I tell ya, that was a first for me, as I cannot remember ever building a song around a title.  For me, the music always comes first and the lyrics second.  After an hour or so of playing with chord structures and melodies, I finally came up with the finished musical product. The finalized lyrics came a few days later.  I then went to record it and all the harmonies and the big drum break in the middle took shape and were added.

From the moment I conceived the song to the final master took about two weeks, which is really fast for me.  I am happy to say this song kind of flowed pretty easily out of me. I am very proud of it and also quite fond of what I regard as its simplistic catchiness. I hope you like it too!

Lyrics

Summer looks so good on you
The sunshine and your smile it comes through
The days on the beach and the nights I share with you
Makes me want to hold you the whole year through
That’s how much I love you baby and everything you do
Summer looks so good on you

Summer makes me drift away
Endless starry nights and sun-kissed days
Hearts afire with the August sun
You hold my dreams I know you are the one
That’s how much I love you baby and everything you do
Summer looks so good on you

That’s how much I love you baby and everything you do
Summer looks so good on you

Summer looks so good on you
Summer I know you love me too
Summer looks so good on you
Summer I share it all with you

That’s how much I love you baby
I know you love me too
Summer looks so good on you
